New Year Goals: 2022

A new year is upon us. And per tradition, new years bring reflection and resolution. I’m not overly good at making and keeping resolutions. I blame my ADHD and bad habit of over-committing to things. That said, as I look back over 2021 and forward to 2020, as a writer, I do have goals for the next year.

2021: A Year in Review

The past year saw the publication of my first novel, based on an idea I’d been toying around with for a decade. I’m proud of the novel, and writing and publishing it taught me more about writing, editing, and publishing than years of graduate school and working as an editor.

The hardest part of being an author is that I didn’t realize how much work marketing my work would be. I’m still learning how to hype myself (which has always been a challenge for me) and how to build hype and excitement for my work. I’m also learning how to reach new readers. It’s a tough gig, but I’m learning from other authors that success here is a marathon and not a sprint.

In addition to my debut, I’ve published both a prequel and the next book in the series. I can see my writing getting better, but I’m still learning about marketing. The best part is that I’m finding my voice, which makes me happy and excited.

2022: Goals for the Future

  • I will finish the third book in my series, Stone Cold. It’s challenging to write, as it does get pretty dark. But I am happy with how the thriller/mystery story arc is turning out. I’m 2/3 of the way through the manuscript, so it may be released a little earlier than I planned.
  • I will also edit and release the fourth book in the series, Crossroad Blues. I’m not going to say more about it at this time, as when I return to the manuscript, things may change.
  • I will become more conversant in marketing and promotion.
  • I would like to livestream a tabletop role-playing game mini-campaign/chronicle set in my world to coincide and hype my book.
  • I would also like to complete either a short story or a novella in a different genre, particularly high fantasy.

What are your goals for the year?
